Focus: colour

Colour is important in the 'look and feel' of your site - some colours appear business-like, while others appear childish. Colour can affect people's mood, and it also comes with cultural associations. Colour can be used to separate items on the page, and to draw the eye to items.

There are a few key rules about using colours on websites:

  • there is a reason why black text on a white background is the standard in print publishing; it is the easiest combination on the eye, making it the most legible combination.
  • red and green should not be used together if possible, because of red/green colour blindness. Blue and yellow can also be a problem for a few people
  • backgrounds behind text should not be patterned, because it is difficult to read
  • some extremely bright colours used together can cause headaches

We will aim to use your company colours, if you have them, developing a scheme of colours using 3-5 toning shades, perhaps with one as a contrast for highlights.
